What this tool does
- EACH PART IS AN ORDINARY, COMPLETE ZIP that opens with a double-click. That is the whole difference with .z01 or .7z.002 volumes, where you need ALL the parts and the right software to open anything at all.
- NO FILE IS CUT IN TWO: a file larger than the size you asked for goes into a part of its own, and the screen says so. Halves of a file would open neither one way nor the other.
- The archive's order is kept rather than packed “optimally”, which would shuffle everything: you should be able to guess which part to look in.
- Parts are numbered to the width of the largest, “01 of 12”, otherwise your file manager sorts them 1, 10, 11, 2.
- Five sizes on offer, from 10 to 200 MB. Twenty is the right choice for email: the twenty-five that mail services advertise include the encoding, which inflates by a third.
What it does not do: Splitting is not compressing: if your files add up to more than the size requested there will be several parts, and that is the point. Nor is it volume-splitting in the archiving-software sense, our parts are independent, which is handier but forbids cutting a large file. A three-hundred-megabyte file stays a three-hundred-megabyte part. And as everywhere here, it all fits in the tab's memory: past 512 MB the archive is refused when you drop it.
