What this tool does
- CONTENTS ARE NOT RE-ENCODED: files are copied as they are into the new container, byte for byte. Converting damages nothing.
- THE ZIP IS COMPRESSED, and each file keeps the smaller of the two versions: an already-compressed photo is stored as is rather than inflated by a few bytes.
- The folder hierarchy is kept, and so are accented names, that is the format's UTF-8 flag, which half the tools out there forget to set.
- NO CLOCK: files carry a fixed date. Two conversions of the same archive produce the same bytes, and the hour you were working never leaves with anything.
- Whatever could not be read (an encrypted entry, an exotic compression) is LEFT OUT AND LISTED. A converted archive quietly missing three files is a trap.
What it does not do: We only convert what we can read: ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ and GZ. A RAR or a 7z is recognised and named, but not opened, see “Open an archive” for the reason, which is a dependency we refuse to add. The ZIP produced is not encrypted and carries no password: this is not a protection tool. And a ZIP dropped in comes out as a ZIP, which is pointless, the tool will say so rather than hand you a copy.
